Your veins will be injected with a strong sclerosing solution which will irritate the
vein walls and produce clotting and inflammation. When this subsides, the vein
will scar down and not carry any blood.
Immediately after the injections, we will elevate your legs in the office for 10-15
minutes. Your support hose will then be put on with an ace bandage over them.
You will be able to drive home. It is important to keep your legs elevated for
several hours after the procedure to keep them as empty of blood as possible.
After the elevation period, activities involving standing still or sitting with legs
down should be avoided. Walking is fine as it promotes blood flow. Exercising
is also fine if it involves leg motion.
Keep the stockings and elastic wrap on overnight. Then remove and keep the
elastic wrap for future use. Wearing the stockings daily will prevent other varicose veins from forming.
Expect bruising and discoloration after the injections. The veins will clot and feel
firm but many patients report symptomatic improvement at this stage. The
bruising can take months to completely resolve.
You may require additional injections. The results will be monitored to determine
if this is needed.
